India - Railways - An encouraging sign for life cycle thinking to improve the safety features in Indian railway sector, the largest network in the world,

It is good to see the life cycle thinking of railways in India. Repair of corrosion is essential for improving the safety features of old coaches.

Necessary safety features added to old ICF coaches: Gohain
IANS | New Delhi July 28, 2017 Last Updated at 21:54 IST
Keeping in mind the safety of its passengers, the Railways has designed old Integral Coach Factory (ICF) coaches with necessary safety features, parliament was told on Friday.
"Integral Coach Factory (ICF) type coaches plying over the Indian Railways have been designed with the necessary safety features considering the operating conditions over Indian Railways," Minister of State for Railways Rajen Gohain told the Rajya Sabha in a written reply.
Gohain said that the work includes complete stripping of the coaches to a bare shell, extensive corrosion repair of the body and underframe, replacement of headstock, if required, provision of new or overhauled draw and buffing gear, refurbishment of coach interiors, polyurethane painting of the exteriors, renewal of toilets and fittings along with plumbing, provision of new fans, lights and batteries, etc.

Corrosion seems to be silent in bringing down Dreamliners. Please do not keep silence in building the knowledge base for collaborative corrosion management

ANA Holdings Inc. is canceling flights as the world’s biggest operator of Boeing Co.’s 787 Dreamliner checks for corrosion in the jet’s Rolls-Royce Holdings Plc engines.

The Japanese airline canceled nine flights scheduled for its 50-jet Dreamliner fleet for Friday and may scrub more than 300 trips through the end of September as it deals with cracking in the medium-pressure turbines of the Trent 1000 engines, Takeo Kikuchi, a deputy senior vice president of engineering and maintenance, told reporters Thursday in Tokyo.

The disruption is the largest 787-related miscue for ANA since 2013, when Boeing and regulators grounded the global Dreamliner fleet after lithium-ion batteries caught fire on two jets. About 38 percent of the 787s in service are powered by the Trent 1000, while the rest are outfitted with General Electric Co. engines.

The latest problem came to the fore as ANA investigated why a 787 engine overheated during a February flight. That jet returned to Kuala Lumpur airport after receiving a warning that the temperature of the exhaust gas from its right engine had spiked. ANA has encountered corrosion in turbines since then, most recently on Aug. 20.

India - Corrosion Management Education - Training Programme on Corrosion Management conducted by CII, 10-11 June 2016, Mumbai

Training Programme on Corrosion Management
10- 11 June 2016

Venue – CII, Godrej Station-side Colony, Opp Railway Station, Vikhroli East, Mumbai

Introduction
Corrosion is an unavoidable but curable threat to economic growth. Approximately 4% of GDP losses amounting to several thousand crores of rupees are caused by this menace each year. It affects the Industry from infrastructure and transportation to production and manufacturing sector. Corrosion Management is the key to safeguard infrastructure and boost the production process of the industries driven by the improvement of their capital productivity, operational reliability, efficiency, performance and health & safety of the assets.
In today’s competitive Scenario, industry is looking at saving each penny, avoiding any failures and ensuring world-class procedural conformity. Corrosion Management is a systematic and holistic approach to reduce risks of corrosion failure thereby extending life span of a plant and ensures integrity of new plant.

Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) through it Corrosion Management Cell has worked towards creating awareness about corrosion prevention strategies through Training Programmes, Conferences, Seminars and Workshops. Detailed Corrosion Audits are CII’s forte that identify ways to measure, control and prevent corrosion. The endeavour is also to equip plant personnel to address corrosion issues.
To give an impetus to corrosion management culture in the area, CII is organizing a two day Training Programme on Corrosion Management on 10-11 June 2016 in Mumbai.Enclosed the detailed circular & reply form.

The themes for two-day training programme are:
